A SETA is trained specifically to teach sensitive exams (breast and pelvic exams, or genital and prostate exams, depending on the SETA’s anatomy) to medical students using their own bodies. Students have an opportunity to practice sensitive exams on the SETA. Along with instructing on correct technique, the SETA offers the patient’s viewpoint on the exams, including: ways to make the exam more comfortable, how to identify anatomical structures for patients, and other doctor-patient communication skills. Faculty chaperones are present during instructional sessions.
SETA-VVUA: SETA who teaches breast, vulva, vagina, uterus, and adnexa exams
SETA-PSR: SETA who teaches penis, scrotum, and rectal exams
Available for training and interview/exam sessions.
Ability to undergo multiple physical exams.
Reliable, punctual, and dependable.
Comfortable with instructing medical students in the presence of faculty chaperones.
Excellent communication skills, willingness and ability to provide students with constructive feedback regarding their performance on sensitive exams.
Educational training and/or professional experience in health professions, communication, behavioral sciences or education preferred.
The hiring process includes a background check and drug screening.

SETAs are scheduled based on the UMMS curricular schedules. Dates are provided as far in advance as possible.
All SETAs are temporary employees of the University of Michigan Medical School, however do not receive any additional benefits associated with the University.
