Job Description:
What is a Sensitive Exam Teaching Associate (SETA)?
The SETA is trained specifically to teach sensitive exams (breast and pelvic examinations, or the genital and prostate exams, depending on the SETA’s anatomy) to medical students using their own bodies. Students have an opportunity to practice sensitive exams on the SETA. Along with instructing on the correct techniques, the SETA offers the patient’s viewpoint on the exams, including: ways to make the exam more comfortable for the patient, multiple approaches to varying situations, how to identify the proper anatomical structures, and how to speak to the patient. Faculty chaperones are present during instructional sessions.
Requirements:
Available for trainings and interview/exam sessions.
Ability to undergo a physical exam (which involves wearing a hospital gown).
Reliable, punctual and dependable.
Comfortable with instructing medical students with the presence of faculty chaperones in the room.
Excellent communication skills, willingness and ability to provide students with constructive feedback regarding their performance on the exam.
Educational training and/or professional experience in health professions, communication, behavioral sciences or education preferred.
The hiring process includes a background check and drug screening.

Working Hours:
SETAs are scheduled based on the students' curricular schedules. Dates are provided as far in advance as possible.
All SETAs are temporary employees of the University of Michigan Medical School, however do not receive any additional benefits associated with the University.
